ANNEX II.

A'

Note on Naval Requirements.

Filtration Units - Supply of Type G Containers.

Filtration units embodying Type G containers are part of the standard equipment of all capital ships and cruisers; they are also provided at certain R.N. Hospitals and First Aid Stations.

2.

Casings are constructed at Home Dockyards or by contract. The containers are assembled and the units tested at the Experimental Station, Porton.

3.

Up to the present, there has been no difficulty in meeting requirements, but this satisfactory state of affairs has been due to Admiralty having been given priority in allocation of containers.

4.

Reserve containers held for Naval services amount to about 5,000; the authorised reserve is about 20,000 which, on present production, there is no immediate likelihood of obtaining. In addition, replacements amounting to 4,000 - 5,000 are likely to be required within the next two years.

5.

Naval filtration units cannot employ type E containers, and an increase of type G container production is therefore considered necessary.

Note on Army Requirements and Deficiences

in Filtration Units.

The Army requirement of type G containers for filtration units is represented almost entirely by the installation of gas-proofed operational rooms in Coast Defence Fortress systems, the majority being in defended ports abroad.

In addition there have been small requirements for P.A.D. purposes in this country.

I understand that filtration units, having a total type G container content of some 27,000, have already been installed.

Our present outstanding requirements of these containers is 18,000, of which 17,000 are for ports abroad.
