ANNEX I.

FILTRATION UNITS.

Note by the Ministry of Supply,

The supply of containers Type G has not been

satisfactory for some months past; production ceased

for a time and has only recently been started.

The difficulties have been chiefly caused

through the supply of esparto grass from North Africa

being cut off. The pulp made from this grass is an

essential raw material for the filters of these

containers. A small stock of suitable grass, however

has now been secured and production is proceeding.

Deliveries of the Type G container for the

last three weeks have been 1,303, 2,623 and 3,435

respectively, and it is expected 5,000 per week will

be reached very shortly.

The type G container is a costly and

difficult article to manufacture.

For some time past

the Air Ministry have been urged to turn over from

this Type to Type E which is now being produced in large quantities (137,000 last week); this is a far

less costly container and much easier to produce.

This they have now agreed to do (at a meeting held on

the 10th February). Production of Type G is to

continue, however, to satisfy the Admiralty and to

cover the spares position.

11th February, 1941.
