fire from ships is overwhelming, a retreat should be made to the second line, whence, almost beyond the reach of ships' fire, the reinforced troops should firmly resist the advance of any force that may have landed.
Additional Works. The works to be executed by the troops are the entrenchments and epaulments in the first line near the shore, the time and labour for which is thus estimated :-

The works of second line, which will be built by contract labour under the R.E. of the section simultaneously with those of the first line, are:--
An entrenchment in the grounds of "La Hacienda," and a block-house with entrenchment on either side of it on the highest knoll of Mount Gough
spur.
Mat-sheds will be built by contract, and it is estimated that they will take about twenty days to construct.
Engineer District. This section is, with Sections IV, V, and VII, in the B Engineer District, under the general Engineer supervision of Captain McCarthy, R.E.
Tools.-The tools required are enumerated in Schedule XVIII (6), and will be issued with the camp equipment.
