The redoubts will contain splinter-proof accommodation for the number of men to be Accommoda- maintained in them permanently. Mat-sheds will be erected on the Pokfullum Road near Belcher, and in rear of the redoubt on Mount Cameron; tents will be used until these preparations are completed. There are numerous houses affording ample accommodation for the troops along the remainder of the position.

Appendix III.

EASTERN DEFENCE.

Section I-Lyemun.

The position consists of Lyemun Redoubt, the Central and West Batteries, and the Description of

position. Reverse Battery. Emplacements are to be made for quick-firing guns overlooking the pass, and on the ridge to the east of Lyemun Redoubt. Infantry emplacements are to be made overlooking the pass, and also others facing east and looking into Lyemun Bay.

Separate from the above is the redoubt to be made on Sywan Hill, with emplacement close to it for one 6·6-inch howitzer; an emplacement for two 8-inch howitzers will also be made on hill over Shau-ki-wan.

3. If the landing is in Lyemun Bay, the attack would be on Lyemun Ridge first and then on the redoubt. Infantry would be posted in the shelter-trenches on Lyemun Ridge to meet this. If the landing be at Sywan Bay, or on the east or south-east coast, the attack would be first on Sywan Hill, and would be met by the infantry posted on this hill.

The Officer commanding, and Officer commanding Royal Artillery, and Officer in charge of submarine mining defence would be in Lyemun Redoubt.

at all other places and filled by coolie labour.
