sufficient for all practical purposes. The lines drawn from Stonecutters West Battery should be S. 27° W. (true), as stated on page 134, paragraph 3, instead of S. 27° 30′ W. (true), and N. 7° W. (true), instead of Ñ. 7° 30′ W. (true).

42. Page 132, paragraph 2.—There is no commercial code pendant signifying "stop instantly." This direction should be reworded to read "flying the commercial code pendant, and the commercial code signal found in the signal book to stop instantly," &c.

43. Page 135, paragraph 6.-The Committee presume that the arrangements here described have been found necessary as the result of local experience. They appear to be somewhat complicated, and would probably require much practice before reliance could be placed on them. The system of flag-signalling should not in any case be resorted to, unless it is impossible to communicate by ordinary method of signalling by semaphore.

44. A few minor errors and discrepancies have been noticed-for example, in the fifth line from the bottom of page 24 "westward" has been written for "eastward,' and in Table F (ii) there are errors of addition in the numbers of hired and permanent coolies. The spelling of names of places is not in all cases uniform.

45. Maps.-It is suggested that the cables landing at Taihowan Bay and Deep Water Bay should be shown on the map facing the title-page.
