Brussels Alliance To Remain
A Regional Set-Up
EXTENSION PLAN ABANDONED
London, May 24.-Plans to extend the Brussels Alliance of the Western Union to an all embracing Western European defence alliance have been abandoned it was learned from authoritative diplomatic sources today?,
The Western Union is to remain primarily a regional grouping limited to its present membership of Britain, ` France and the Benelux countries, and developed into a core of the ultimate regional collective security. It is envisaged that it would be linked with other similar forthcoming regional groupings in Western Europe-above all Scandinavia and the Mediterranean area-rather than absorb other European states.
