Italy's Merchant Navy Climbing To Half
Of Prewar Tonnage
Italy's merchant marine, 50 percent destroyed in the war, will be back to half its strength by June, and the present rate of progress on reconstruction of ports will contribute further to the revival of the shipping industry. Approximately 3,000,000 tons of Italian shipping were sunk during the war. At the end of July 1946, the mer- chant fleet numbered a little less than 300,000 tons, but by six months later officials reported the fleet had grown to 800.000 tons.
