As the French Government stood with its back to the wall, faced with a wave of nation-wide dis- content, the administrative commission of the powerful, Communist-dominated trades union con- gress, CGT, held a special meeting today to draft labour's demands for a general wage readjustment.

American Scientists To

Study Pacific Islands

Washington, May 20.

The Navy announces that 44 scientists shortly will begin extensive research on the Marshall, Caroline and Mariana islands in the Pacific.

They will study the former Japanese mandated islands for cultural, economic and anthropological background, The Navy will supply the transportation to many of the 1,400 Islands and atolls to be visited.

The islands have not been subjected to scientific examination since a German expedition visited them in 1910.

The studies of the scientists, representing 21 institu- tions, will provide a basis for the administration of the islands, with particular attention to rehabilitation, health and welfare of the inhabitants.-United Press.
