Peiping Residents Air DUMBBELLS Political Views On
Walls With Slogans
BY ANTHONY ULLSTEIN
In Peiping, if you want to sound off on your political views you don't write a letter to your favourite newspaper-you plaster up a slogan on the nearest wall.
The newspapers are all government-backed or dominated and are cramped for space. But the walls, by courtesy of the Mings and the Manchus and still earlier builders of the former capital, will get your message across to everyone from the foreign diplomat in his ricksha to the farmer driving his donkey into town. Slogans and resolutions-pasted and chalked, up in and around the main thoroughfares record the issues that in recent mouths have stirred this cultural centren of North China. much in the same way as rock layers of dif- ferent periods tell a story to the
rologist.
Another correspondent winds up an irate lecture with: "1 tell you. you Kuomintang secret service men, you are the real Chinese traitors."
A neighbouring wall is quick with rebuttal: "You Yalla Communista. When are you giving back Dairen?"
