RUSSO-GERMAN WAR: RADIO
PICTURES
These photographs, which are among the first batch of pictures to be sent from Moscow to New York by newly-equipped rádio transmission, are exclusive to the "Hongkong Telegraph."
MOSCOW RAID-Nazis are trying to repeat in Moscow the same indiscriminate air blitz tactics they adopted in England. This apartment house in the Soviet capital, far from any military objective, has had its rear wall sliced away by a bomb, and every room is exposed.
RED ARMY NURSES are pictured here sowing undergar- ments for soldiers. To release mon for duty at the front, women are taking over many civilian duties in Russia.

North should not have considered doubling merely because he held two spade tricks. South had announced (although untruthfully) that his hand wat virtually defenceless. ilenec North, with three hearts, should have been doubtful about South delivering even one trick to the defence of a spude contract.
Admittedly, North Was In a "tough spel" after the two previ- ous bids. A pass would convey a plcture of less strength than North actually held, and heart raise might be severely penalised. All in all, however, slice North did have to choose from among many evils, "I was sitting West and the hand dangerous. After such
ralse to five hearts was the least raise it is the worst frenk I ever held. South would be East's turn to be "on the opened with a bid of four hearts, spot," and he might very well de- n bad bid, of course. I then bldcide to double. Of course, if he did four spades. This was either bold double, West should not permit it or rash and I don't know which you to stand, but should go to five
spades, This am afraid,
North would say. I gured this way. I would have to double, und South my partner had nothing, the oppo-brobably would have to teave the nents had a slum; if
double in, since his my partner
own absurd had something, the sacrifice would opening bid had deprived him of be worthwhile and obviously it was the opportunity to locate an ace in the last opportunity for a bld. North fore, he could not know that a small the North hand and since, there- doubled. I made five, which finally siem in either diamonds or hearts proved to be a tle for top. •
would be a laydown.
"I would appreciate your com- ments on all the bids. D. G., New York."
South's four heart bid was far out of line; such a bid, being a shut- out, denies defensive strength..
South's holding was distinctly slammish and, although he could not afford to open with a two bld when hulding only four honour-tricks, the bid that offered the greatest chance of reaching the proper spot was a merg one heart.
West had no need to feel that he wus rash in overcalling with four spades. Fla_terrifle freak mude. such an overcall highly logical.

HORSE ALSO USED—This photograph, found on a German prisonor of war, indicates that the Nazi blitzkrieg does not depend wholly on the panzen. German horse-drawn artillery is soon passing a wrecked tank.
