Lattimore and BOWL OF RICE Police Reserve

Chang Hsuch-liang

Some weeks ago a news agency report from Washington sinted that official circles there were greatly perturbed over the quarrel between the Chinese Communists and the Central Government, and that Mr Owen Lattimore, who was belag sent. to Chungking as the President's personal representative, would take up the matter with Gen, Chiang Kai-shek. Some time later, it was reported that Mr Lattimore would also intervene on behalf of Gen. Chang Hsuch-liang and try and obtain his re- lense.

One would have imagined that in these grim times the State Department would have something more to worry about than the quarrels of the Communilst party with the Chinese government, and that Mr Lattimore would have something else to do in Chungking than bother the already overburdened Gen- eralissimo about the fate of Gen, Chang Hsuch-liang, writes a correspondent of the "North China Daily News" in Peiping.
