An Easy Contract

NE definition of an expert is very queen, but West still had the sult simple-"a player who appre~ stopped, and eventually declarer ciates the possibility of bad breaks had to concede another diamond, and and takes, measures to guard against defeat. them." South, in to-day's hand, was not an expert.

South dealer.

If East had been very bold, he would have put in a four spade bid over North's four hearts, but ad- .mittedly, it is hard to become ar- gressive when holding no higher card than a nine-spot. A tour spade contract would have been "cokl," de- except against double-dumuny fence.

It is hard to imagine a hand in which ten tricks are more readily available. After winning the Bird trick with the club ace, declarer should draw trumps, but then should take the elementary precau- den of ruling away tion

The spade king was opened, fol- lowed by the ace, and West then shifted to a' club. Declarer drew the adverse trumps, and then took the diamond finesse to the jock, not caring very much whether it lost or not. He figured, of course, that the rest of the diamonds wonki be good. in any event, but he was wrong. Not only did the jack lose to West's mond king.

CENTENARY

The Hongkong and Singapore Royal Artillery, an integral part of the British defence forces in the Far East, celebrates this year the 100th anniversary of its formation. In Hongkong, the cent- cnary will be observed later in the year, but in Singapore the Corps recently held a contenary parade to mark the occasion. Picture above shows some of the H.K.S.R.A. assembled at the parade to hear a message of congratulation from H.M. the King.

'Some of the H.K.S.R.A. marching in mufti to the centenary parado in Singapore. Picture gives a good idea of the fine type of men who compose the Corps, which is commanded by British officers and Indian officers holding the King's Commission.

In a hundred years, the Corps has changed its weapons from clumsy muzzle loaders operating against slow-moving ground targota to all typos of modern guns, including quick-firing Bofors anti-aircraft guns, one of which is shown above. Tho, Bofors gun has proven its officioncy against high-spood planos, and makes up an important part of the aorial defence of Malaya.
