At first George was hostile, uncom- municative. But Candy humbly refrained from asking more informa- tion than they wanted to give him. However, bu had an interesting pro- position to offer. Candy had $250 which the ranch had been compelled to pay him for the loss of his hund four years ago, and another $40 he would receive at the end of the month.
He begged to be allowed to put in all tits in return for a part- nership in their place; just for the right to live there, and hoe in the garden, and wash the dishes,
"I'll be on our own place, an' I'n be let to work on our own place. An' I'll make a will, leave my place to you guys in case I kick off."
George decided to make the deal. He and Lennie would receive $100 between them at the end of their month. This, with Candy's fortune, would give them $400-enough cash to secure the place they had in mind, for which the needy old couple who owned it were asking only 5000. Candy and Lemie could go and get the place started, and George would continue working on the ranch until he had earned the balance.
For the Arst time their dream seemed close to reality. Candy hap plly handed over his $300, and George was slowing away when the ranch hands returned from the barn. Among then were Silm and Curley, stil arguing. At least, Slim was ar guing, while Curley was apologizing for having asked Siim once too often about Mac's whereabouts.
Curley was really on the defen- sive, accepting Slim's reprimand with nothing more than a wheedling ex- advice to look after his wife, Carlson, planation. Others seconded Slim's
even Candy. And as Curley looked about, wondering whom he could safely attack, his glance fell upon Lennle sitting on a keg, his eyes still with the rabbits, rapt with the vision of the title place

George, seeing that which he had dreaded most happening, was for once at a loss. Curley went raining blows mercilessly on Lennie's face. Tower- lng nearly a full twelve Inches above his assailant, Lennie made no effort even to defend himself, as the fists smashed into his face and the blood welled from his nose and
trickled from the corners of his mouth.
Then George found his decision. "Get im, Lennie," he yelled through his cupped hands. "Don't let him do il Go get 'im!"
But Lennic still too confused to fight back, only covered his face with his hands, while Curley viciously rained blows into his abdomen.

When they had revived him, Slim spoke to Curley sharply and quickly,
"Listen. I think you get your hand 'caught in a machine. If you don't tell nobody what happened, we won't. But you jest tell and try to get this guy canned and we'll tell everybody. An' then will you get the laugh
