Pistol Shot Costs $160 Mind Complete Blank, Says Seaman
The firing of an automatic pistol in Wanchai ten nights ago cost Arthur Edward Smith, 40, naval scamen, $160 in the Central Magstracy to clay.
He was fined $100 by Mr. Sheldon for having caused hond-injuries to | Li Sul-yin, and $50 for having had possession of an automatle pistol and
ammunition. Additionally, ho ordered to pay the injured man $10 compensation.
wan
Li Sul-yin told the court that he was walking along Anton Street near the Sailors and Soldiers' Home when something like small stones fell on his head. He put up his hand and found his head was bleeding. He went to friend's house, had the bleeding stopped and then reported
the
matter to pollee. At the time he was struck he heard the sound of
firearms.
Dr. John Grey of Queen Mary Hosplin said Li had two small scalp wounds which could have been caused by bullels. The wounds were very superficial and Li was detained at the hospital only two days.
Frank Donfeld, Naval Assistant Provost Marshal, said he went to tho. Home and took an automatic pistol from Smith's pocket after the No. 1 Boy had made a complaint,

"I have nothing to say," defendant told Mr. Sheldon. "I was drunk and my mind is a complete blank. I do not know what happened. I had the pistol since 1922."
have
Sergeant Bentley said he had inter- viewed the Commodore and it was after that interview that it was decid- ed to bring the matter to court. It was regarded as a serious offence. Smith might easily have been appear- ing on a much more serious charge.
A naval officer told the court that Smith had had an exemplary charac ter for the last 18 years, The pistol was confiscated.
