DRIVING TIPS

BRAKES:-Always apply brakes as, gently as possible, consistent with stopping in time. Even in emergency stops a car can be brought to a halt more quickly with its wheels turning than with them locked by too heavy pressure on the brake pedal. Always avoid severe brake applications which cause the wheels to Jock and slide the tyres, Keep the clutch engaged until the last moment before actually 'stopping then disengage it and apply a trifle more brake pressure. Learn to drive so that you never need to stop abruptly. The art of | properly - uning the brakes já not difficult to master and it is one of the marks of the expert driver.

LONDON, July 3 (Reuter).— "All our forces have grown and are on their toes, and it is the one ambition of all to prevent the soil-of Great Britain being solled by enemy footprints,” said Lord Croft, Joint Parliamentary Under-Secretary of War, in the House of Lords to-day.

Viscount Caldecote, Leader of thei House, gave an assurance that the Government had no intention ofį abandoning any fortified position in any part of the Dominions.

LATEST

LINERS

Simlar scenes were duplicated at the remainder of the centres, where willing helpers rapidly dealt with the enormous intake of baggage.

Transports and furniture vans re- moved the luggage, and for the Arst time for many years, no parking of private vehicles was allowed in either Pedder Street or Jackson Rond, opposite the Hongkong Club.

LONDON REPORT STATES INVASION OF FRENCH INDO-CHINA ENVISAGED

SPECIAL TO THE "TELEGRAPH"

LONDON, JULY 4 (UP)'—THE IMPRESSION PREVAILS IN

| LONDON THAT JAPAN INTENDS TO INVADE FRENCH INDO-CHINA. It is doubted here whether the French will offer serious resistanco. Reliable quarters confirm that the British Government has decided to refuse the Japanese demands that Britain close the Burma highway. It is officially denied, however, that the British reply has been delivered in Tokyo yet.

It is learned that preparations are under way to resist any forward movement by Japan at the cost of the British Empire.

Authoritative Japanese sources state that Japan has officially assured Britain that the Japanese Foreign Minister's interpretation of the "Asiatic' Monroe Doe- trine" does not contemplate the inclusion of Australasia in the Japanese sphere of influence. 17

A diplomatic amplification of Mr. Arita's broadcast indicates that Japan has informed Britain that the southernmost extremity of Japan's "stabilising policy" in the Far East would be the Caroline and Marshal Islands.
