BEHIND THE HEADLINES-by JOHN BLUNT.
THE tragedy of France is so immense that even now, it is difficult to comprehend Its magnitude.
It is true, that her standing army was sorely irled and virtually over- run by German forces which advanced behind the most amazing Vanguard over known. The mechanised forces of the enemy achieved a success which is un- parallet in the history of warfare, out whether that success was justi-- ned, or should inve occurred, only Lime can say.

It does seem that an unexpected disaster began when German tanks. were able cross the bridges of the Meuse, but it is too late to apportion blame to those who fall- cd to

Bates were almost opened to her and even although the greatest debacle in history was a momentary triumph for the enemy forces, its simplicity of operation does not, as some people are Inclined to believe, prove Germany to be invincible.
Heavy Liability
THE subjugation of so many European countries within a few weeks is any- thing but an asset to the con- querors.
Indeed, it becomes an extremely heavy ability. The countries under the Genman yake muni be Harrisoned and ruthlessly 2011- trolled, and when one thinks in terms of thousands of cities, towns and hamlets, the German tusk is not so simple as might at first appear. The heartening British raids on Channel ports during tha week bears is out.
As for the British Empire, there is no fear, Terrible experiences will probably be recorded in the British Isles, but whatever the civilian population may have to bear, will be reflected in the misery which
the Germans themselves will experience.

What is more important is remember that the German people have yet to see their own town and cities turned into a shambles, n fate they will have brought upon their own heads.
Standing The Test
OF the two races, there is no doubt as to which will stand the test with the more determination...
Every man and woman in the British Isles is inspired by the knowledge that the British 'cause is righteous. We tlmost knelt in suppliention to Hiller' for Pence. We humiliated ourselves in our

The War Fund
THE spontaneity with which Hongkong has respond- ed to the War Fund Appeal, is not only most gratifying, but remarkable.
To raise a million dollars within six days, is surely a record for the Far Eazi.
Since the rush of those first few days, the total has stendily riten until it is nearing the one-and-a- quarter million mark. It may be expected to record n snow-ball

Against this, it has been pointed out that up till yesterday, the number of receipts issued had not reached the two thousand mark, which is a tribute to the unstinting generosity of many firms, associo- tions and Individuals.
Those who have waited for the rush to subside may be expected to come forward now, for no cause has ever been of more vital interest to every one of us.
What Pitt Said
I came across a quotation the other day taken from the last speech given at the Guildhall by William Pitt in 1805.
"England has saved herself
by her exertions, and will, I trust, save Europe by her example." Those famous and stirring lines of Kipling's also come to mind:-
"There is but one task for all- One life for each to give. What stands if Freedom fall? Who dies if England Ilve?
The task in Hongkong is mainly nne of some financial sacrifice. Is it too much to nak for England's suke?
