SPECIAL TO THE “TELEGRAPH"

JAPANESE TROOPS who, for six weeks, have been blockading the Hongkong frontier, now appear to be blockaded themselves.

Although the situation on the border this morning is obscure, it is believed that Chinese regular troops have recaptured the entire fron- tier zone between Shataukok and Shum Chun,

Shataukok itself is still in Japanese hands, but the garrison there, numbering not more than twenty or thirty men, is completely cut off,

Similarly, the Chinese, who are be- Hlaved to be regular troops of the Fourth Route (Kwangtung) Army, has isolated the Japanese headquar- ters and garrison at Shun Chun. TWO ALTERNATIVES

About 3,000 Japanese troops are believed to be besieged in Shum Chun. They face two alteratives if the Chinese maintain their pressure and reinforcements are not able to reach them. Firstly, they face annt- hilation from what are believed to be overwhelming odds. Secondly, they face retirement across the Shum Chuma River Into Hongkong territory. The consequences of this action would be internment for the duration of the war.

Fighting, which commenced 11.30 p.m. on Saturday Justed throughout yesterday and last night, but a lull has prevolled since 7 e'cluck this morning.

Japanese planes, however, continue bombing and machine-gunning opera- tions against the Chinese lines. REAL OPPOSITION
