Major Bombardment Threat To Foochow "CITY OF

FOOCHOW—the literal translation of the Fukien capital's name is "Blissful City" — heard with trepidation yester- day afternoon that a major artillery and aerial bombardment would commence against it at dawn to-

morrow.

Announcing that foreigners residing in the city would be allowed 'under to-morrow morning to evacuate, a Japanese naval spokesman said last night that the boom across the entrance to the Min River would be closed at dawn, after which time it will be impossible for any foreign ships, including British war- ships to enter or leave the river.

Foochow is the Afth oldest treaty port in China. It was opened to foreign trade' in July, 1861-seventy-eight years ago this week.
