Miss Marjorie Lawrence, of Belle View-gardens, Stockwell, following a Wext-end supper party,

Mr. Rowland Thomas, KC., for Mrs. Knowing, sald in court that it was alleged the slander was uttered by Miss Lawrence at supper at the MacGill house of a Mrs, Maitland Crichton in May, 1038,

It was to the effect that Capt. Knowling had seduced Mrs. Know ling; that her son Michael was born before she was married, she and Capt. Knowling had to be married. There is no suggestion by the de- fence that there is scrap of truth in the allegation. There is a simple defence that the words were never uttered by Miss Lawrence, and she took immediate steps to repudiate having spoken then," he

he said.

be disturbed.

"On_occasions," she went on, "Cup- toln Knowling was an exceedingly nice person. On other occasions on which we have met, there was another Captain Knowling."

Mr. Thome: Are you inclined to gossip from time to tine?

Miss Lawrence: I think all

women do a little.

Mr. Thomas: Whoever It might have been that started the rumours about Mrs. Krowling, you will agree that it was very unfortunate for her?

Lady Geraldine Boyle, of Campden HIll-road, Kensington, said that at the supper party none of the words alleg ed to have been spoken by Miss Law- rence was uttered in her hearing.

She was surprised, she said, to get a letter from Mrs. Knowling's solletters to say that Miss Kay! hadi mentioned her as a witness.
