Defendant States Story

Complete Fabrication

Charged with obtaining $19,000 from a widow by a confidence trick, Li Hei-ting, master of the Yu Hai Leung Import and Export Firm, Connaught Road Central, appeared at the Criminal Sessions, yesterday.

His Honour Sir Atholl MacGregor, Chief Justice, who returned from furlough on Wednesday, was wel- comed back by the Hon. Mr. Leo D'Almada Jnr., who was instructed by Mr. M. A. da Silva for the pro- secution. Mr. D. J. N. Anderson was instructed by Mr. G. S. Hugh- Jones for the defence.

Complainant in the case was Chin Il-tze, widow, of No. 10, Vilinge Road, and the alleged trickery took place in December.

The following Jury was empanell- ed: Messrs. G. A. Lawrence (Fore man), S. K. Heiberg, F. M. Garcia, E. A. Noronha, D. L. Ballantyne, Lim Kim-chong nod Au Chung-gue. An objection to the Chinese mem- bers of the Jury by defendant wan disallowed by Sir Atholl. The reason given was that they have been known to the complainant."
