"OLD

CROCK" DRIVERS WITH UMBRELLAS

SPLUTTERING their way bravely through torrential rain and a strong wind, all but 12 of the 105 starters finished the course to time in the "old crocks" London-Brighton run recently.

Tho run is held by the R.A.C. to celebrate the anniversary of "emancipation day,” 1896, when the two m.p.h. limit and the man with the red flag were abolished.

Doyen of these veterans was a Cannstatt Daimler of 1804, the frat : vellele to secure a licence for public hire in London.

Many of the "old crocks" had been rescued from chicken-runs, barns and scrap-beaps.

One was found in a field with a tree growing through . The tree had to be cut down before the car could be removed.

In spite of the dull weather, a large crowd watched the stort In Hyde Park and cheered the cars as they left the starting-post, without опе failure.

Hundreds of modern cars lined the roadway, bright and luxurious. com- pared with the early ploncern, over many of which were umbrellas to shelfer their drivers from the rain. Cuplain G. E T. Eyston drove a 1803 Aprendes, and received

special cheer as he left the starting line.

SPEED LIMIT

Gold medals were presented by the Mayor of Brighton (Councilor J. Nanson) to the 93ccessful drivers, Speed limits from 10 to 18 m.p.h. were insposed ecarding to the age of the cars, and special awards were given to the winners of cach group. These winners were: E. L. Wood (1806 Leon-Bellee); F. S. Rowden (1898 Star), J. Swift (190) Pan- hard), P. W. Hutton-Stott, jun. (1903 Lanchester).

Auto "Victim”

Disappears

Louisville, Ky. Miss Peggy Honnings reported to police that she struck a woman with her automobile but could not find the "victim" when she stopped a few feel away. She said a man who witnessed the necident told her to drive on- that the woman was a friend of his who didn't want any publicity.
