"Looking into The Future"

To the Editor,

Hongkong Telegraph.

SirA more concrete form of prophesy of the future of the Orient was made by Raphael in his Astro- logical predictions (see Raphael's Almanac of 1939),

He said that the Sino-Japanese confilet is not thought likely to tor- minale until at least half of 1939 and the defeat of Japan appears to be almost inevitable, that Rusin will be Involved in the confilet's con- cluding stages. that the victory la Roing the Chinese and defent followed by revolution later in tho year being the lot of Japan.

In comparing the above forecast with the ancient Chinese prophesy as published in your paper, both predicts the Chinese wilt succeed in their struggle for National Indepen- dence, making of China a World force for Peace,

The Astrological patterns of 1939 shows the closing stages of the Japanese-catted "China Incident". As the War began in September, 1931, when Jupiter conjuncts. Nep- tune in Virgo, its end will be after April, 1039 when both meals again In opposition.

The Moon's several occultations of Uranus in 1939, as same as that of Jupiter during the World War, de- notes Teutonic's expansion.

When Uranus makes its transit the Rome/Berlin meridian in July 1939, we will see a new Nazis venture in Eastern Europe.

As the Democracy front is stronger than that of August 1930, the Dietn- tors will not succeed, but their col- lapse is not far.

"OP"

IL T. LUK.

Sir-Regarding your photograph yesterday. What is the meaning of the word "OP" used in the Lambeth Walk dance?

* Just "Ok"--Ed,

A. T. P.

"The First Shot"

Sir, I was interested in both the arilete and subsequent letter by your Correspondent "Proud of the Regi- ment" on the first shot fred in the Grent War,

"Proud of the Regiment", however, errs in claiming that the first Erl fisher to fire a shot in the war was a gunlayer aboard H.M.S. Amplion. This shot, which sank the German ntine-layer Konigen Laulse was, on your correspondent's own admis- slan, fired on August 5, 1914.

On August 4, about an hour after war was declared between Germany and Great Britain, n shot was fired from the forts at Sydney leads in Australia to prevent a German steamer from escaping to sea. The to and became the ship was hove first active prize of war,

I cannot reenil the entire incident: perhaps an Australian reader can give us the story.

EX-MARINER.

Appeal in Aid of Street Sleepers' Shelters

Sir.At this festive season, when most people can afford to make merry, I desire once more to appeal to the charitable members of the community 10 help the Street Sleepers Shelter Society.

By the kludness of the Government our Society is enabled once again to use rent-free, as shelters, the old Kowloon Magistracy, the St. Peter'a shelter in Des Voeux Road, West, and the upper floor of the former printing shop in Vict

Victoria Gaol,

Whilst the unfortunate refugees from China deserve our drepest sympathy, we must not neglect the work of giving a shelter during the cold winter nights to our own Hong- kong destitutes who have no home but the streets.

Our Society has no flog-day and relles entirely upon the generosity

sympathisers.

G

Donations

may be sent either 10 our Hon. Treasurer. Mr. F. Grove, of Messrs. Thomson & Co., Hongkong Bank Buliding, or to the South China Morning Post, 3, Wyndham Street, who are again kindly receiving donations on our behalf.

H. E. POLLOCK, Chairman, Street Sleepers' Shelter

Society.

Language Reform Urged

Melbourne.

A reform of the English language which would avoid the tiresome re- petition of phrases like "he or the," him or her" and "his or her," espe- cially in legal documents, is proposed by Gregory Hynes, nn Australian lawyer.
