Sir, I was interested in both the arilete and subsequent letter by your Correspondent "Proud of the Regi- ment" on the first shot fred in the Grent War,
"Proud of the Regiment", however, errs in claiming that the first Erl fisher to fire a shot in the war was a gunlayer aboard H.M.S. Amplion. This shot, which sank the German ntine-layer Konigen Laulse was, on your correspondent's own admis- slan, fired on August 5, 1914.
On August 4, about an hour after war was declared between Germany and Great Britain, n shot was fired from the forts at Sydney leads in Australia to prevent a German steamer from escaping to sea. The to and became the ship was hove first active prize of war,

Whilst the unfortunate refugees from China deserve our drepest sympathy, we must not neglect the work of giving a shelter during the cold winter nights to our own Hong- kong destitutes who have no home but the streets.
Our Society has no flog-day and relles entirely upon the generosity
