GUERILLAS' GALLANTRY- REVEALED

Tried To Blow Up Destroyer

Canton, Apr. 22. The gallantry of four infantrymen who faced almost certain death to

Japanese de blow up if possible stroyer is

is described in reports to the Provincial Government and Military Headquarters by Magistrate Chang Wel-chang of Chungahan. Rowing fast cargo boat straight for Hopao Island, they timed it to arrive along- after warship

little side the

ht, at which hour the crew few be in bed, and only lookouts would be on deck.

Espied from far off, the alarm was given, and the ship weighed anchor. The plan to blow it up frustrated, the cargo boat made for an armed launch. Hand grenades

were thrown, and then a fuse was set, the cargo boat being torn into thousands

of pleces, ns was also the launch, which it is supposed there must have been at least 20 Japanese sallors.

In the explosion three of the Chinese perished.

By making a

quick dive the fourth got back to land,

but not before he got a bullet through the buttock,

The four heroes are from the guerilia band of General Yeh Ting, who is serving with the 4th Route Army. As other portions of the old Red Army in the North, General Yeh's contingent will act indepen- dently of the regulars, attecicing weak spots in the Japanese lines, and undertaking expeditions such as that carried out by these four men, according to the Wang Tung agency.
