THE PASQUIER CHRONICLES

By Georges Duhamel

(Dent, 108. Gd.)

Christmas present slogan was " Give Duha-

mel." A glorious book. The sort of story Dickens might have writton if he had been a Frenchman. And there are still, I gather, some copies left for you in the shops....

This is the way to write a family chronicle.

No nonsense about uncles and aunts and cousins to the third and fourth degree: no racing over half the earth and delving deep in the past to drag in picturesque character or a dramatic incident:. no vast genealogical tree to irritate you more each time you refer to it.

*

*

For Georges Duhamel knows his business. He is writing about the Pasquier family-father, mother and five children-first, last and all the while.

Not exclusively, of course, since the Pasqulers have friends and lovers and business associates. But they come in because they really are a part of that compact but expanding mass, not because of any accident of blood relationship.

Delightfully bound and printed, thia volume consists of five full- length novels, three of which have already appeared separately over hore.

In the rat, News from Havre, the family, very hard up, is wait- ing anxiously for a legacy to materialise and making all sorts

STOMACH PAINS

RELIEVED IMMEDIATELY

How would you like to feel your stomach pains melt away a few moments after taking just ono dose of stomach powder ? You can have this Joyful experienced providing you use the right stomach powder. "Let Mr. Plant, an actual stomach sufferer, tell you which remedy to use:

For three years," Mr. Plant says. "I mustered terribly with gastritis and nervous debility, until life became a misery to me. I visited hospital, was attended by doctors and tried all sorts of so-called remedies, but of no avail. I be came worse and worse and felt as though I did not care what happened, although I am only a young man

Then ono day made up my mind to give Maclean Drand Stomach Powder a trial. 'I felt relief from the first dose and alter finishing the bottle I was a now mau. My weight increased rapidly, and I began to eat things I had formerly shunned.

of plans for spending the money when it does arrive.

In the last, The, House in the Desert, the Pasquiers are still making optimistic plans, still mortgaging the future. Some of them have achieved their ambl- tions. Bome are temporarily over- drawn on their idealistic accounts.

Bub-the news from Havre that will put the whole world right is confidently. expected at any moment now.

Most of the story is told by Laurent, whose printing venture is in ruins at the end. I should sum up his development thus: first, he saw through his father and then he saw through himself.

The robustness of M. Duhamel's genius- yes, genius is the con- sidered word — is proved by the fact that this summary is neither gloomy nor cynical.

In fact, I found this a cheerful, lively and at times extraordinarily amusing Great Work, Raymond, the father of the family, is a sort of French Mr. Micawber, always waiting magnificently for Some- thing to Turn Up.

Disreputable but imposing, ridl- culous and exasperating but lov- able, maintaining his grotesque dignity in spite of all mishaps and exposures, he is an unforgettable

ngure.

And round him are grouped the harassed mother and those bril- llant, wayward children, com- pored into a picture of French bourgeois lfe so convincing that I felt, as I read, that I had stepped Into that solid frame myself.

A glorious book. In fact, a masterpiece.
