CRANBORNE

SERIOUS CLEAVAGE

..

Foreign Secretary Cheered By Crowds; U.S. Dubious Of Policy

Chamberlain May Pursue

London, Feb. 20.

It was officially announced late to-night that Mr. Anthony Eden, Foreign Secretary, and Viscount Cranborne, the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, had resigned. Both resignations have been accepted.

An earlier message says that Mr. Anthony Eden conveyed his decision to resign orally, and not by letter...

The full Cabinet re-assembled at 10 p.m., and broke up half an hour later, having received the resignations of the two Ministers.

EITHER. LORD HALIFAX 'OR

QUITS POST- PREMIER TO SUCCEED

No announcement of Mr. Anthony Eden's successor can be made to-night, because the Premier must formally submit the matter to the King in the morning.

The choice is believed to lie between Lord Halifax, who recently visited Berlin to engage in conversations with Herr Adolf Hitler, and the Premier himself, Mr. Neville

Chamberlain.

Eden Regrets Necessity Of Resignation

Mr. Eden, in a letter offering his resignation to the Premier says:

The events of the last few days have made a plain difference between 'us on decision, greatly important in itself and far reaching in

BRITISH SHIP HELD BY JAPANESE AFTER SEIZURE NEAR COLONY

The Hongkong steamer Asian, seized by the Japanese. and taken to Bako, in the Pescadores, has been released as a result of strong protests by the British Government. The Asian will arrive in Hongkong to-morrow morning, after being detained for over a week.

There is a probability that further protests may be made to Japan when a full report of the seizure is received from the Master of the vessel, Captain R. C. Creer, a British subject.

Track Still Heavy After Rain Of Week-End; Racing Keen

This, the second day of the annual racing carnival of the Hongkong Jockey Club, is Derby Day.

Unlike Saturday, brilliant sunshine greeted race- goers this morning at Happy Valley, making the proceedings much more enjoyable for the crowd, which again assumed large proportions.

After the rain over the week-end the track is still on the heavy side, and fast times are at the present moment out of the question.

.

His Excellency the Governor, Sir Geoffry Northcote, and party, arrived on the course in time to see the first race, the Mongolian Stakes, which was won by the Dutch Stable, Hollandia, with Piet Hein, from a field of - 25
