NO CRICKET Relegation Would Solve Problem

By Frank Thorogood

All the cricket world is talking of the cricket reform proposals of the M.C.C. commission.

JONAHS

FOR 3

I think it a geat pity that the scheme advocated many years ago for a competition on the basis of promotion and relegation was turned down.

Such a plan would not only come into line with public fancy, but ease the congested programnic of the championship.

Instead, we have the present- dar ing recommendation that the number of competitors should be reduced from 17 to 15.

-THE TIME FOR UNITY

I hope a solution will not be sought in that way.

In my view, it is the sporting duty of each county to stand by each other in the hour of need.

Who are to be the Jonahs in the case of reduction?

I can Imagine x storm of protest from the followers of the doomed counties. As the secretary of Hamp- shire naively puts it;

"Reduction would be a good thing

THE WAGES QUESTION

One important monetary and per (sonal effect of such a reduction has been pointed out by Nichols, the Essex and England fast bowler, who says!

"Under this scheme the majority of professional players will be losing muney, as in nine cases out of ten. they are paid so much per match."

The "Jonsh" disaster might, ng suggested, be avoided by amalgama- tion, and a vice-president of Leices tershire, Mr. C, E. Loseby, advocates the fusion of his own county either with Northants or Lincolnshire.

Meanwhile ahould be under- stood, on the authority of an in- fluential member of the M.C.C., Chat no reduction, if any, is con. templated before 1840, Another legislator

is no question of forcing extinction on a club," and he sug- gests the likelihood of the two de- posed clubs taking part in the Minor Counties Competition.

That suggestion seems to pave the proTM way for a future scheme of molion and relegation.

NON-STOP TESTS?

In the plea of the Commission for the reduction of matches in the cham-i plonship I read a strong inference that the heads of the cricket world story of attempts to find a treasure, in this country are preparing for the introduction of non-stop tests, parti- £2,500,000, intreag be worth reputed to which may or may not-have fain cularly against Australia.
