MEN'S HEADS-AND WOMEN'S FEET-ARE BIGGER
"Outsizes" Are Almost The Average For Men's Hats Nowadays
THE REASONS ARE:
BRAINIER MEN-
MORE ATHLETIC
WOMEN
MEN'S heads-and women's feet-are getting
bigger.
Hatters are now making bigger hats for men- and shoemakers are making larger shoes for women.
The reason, according to experts, is that men are becoming brainier, and women are more athletic. The Wholesale Hat Merchants
Association has just issued a new
gauge to be standardised through Goods Van Makes
out the trade. It took them eight months of careful investigation to obtain the gauge, and they measured over 3,000 heads, and as many hats.
The result is that size 7 is now 22.5/8 Inches, instead of 22,
One hat merchant was careful to explain that the measurements were those of the head, instead of the In. side circumference of the hat, with previous gauges.

But Mr. C. N. Shaw, secretary of the Wholesale Hat Merchants' Asso- ciation, said: "During the past two years we have noticed a definite in- crease in the size of heads.
up-
"Previously we used 10 scll bats from size 6% upwards. Now they are mostly from 04 wards, and many are 714 to 73% --an almost unheard-of size in the old days.
Another hatter said: "The most popular, cheap hats run from 0% to 634, while the dearest run from 7 to 7. Hends in the West End of London seem larger than those in the East End.

Dr. F. G. Parsons, Fellow in Anthropology at Thomas's Hospital, London and former Profesoar of Anatomy London University, said: "If take the best students from a class and
their heads, the measure average measurement is nearly al- waya greater than that of the less edúcable.

"From my own investigations bave found that hends are getting higher. There is a definite increase in the distance from the earhole to the centre of the top of the skull."
Last year it was discovered that women's feet were bigger. I was found that size five was the most popular, whereas previously it was size four, or even smaller.
