a large converted mansion on Campdenhill, Holland Park, W., engineers are producing apparatus capable of projecting television pic- tures on to a full-size cinema screen.

The 150-year-old garden outside provides a strange contrast with the complleated apparatus: Inside, which embodies the Intest developments in radlo science.

"While United States experimenters continue to talk of television pictures in terms of inches, the Scophony engineers are developing apparatus for pictures many square feet in size," Mr. F. Sagall, of Scophony Television, Ltd., told me,

I saw a film of Jessie Mathews in "First & Girl" projected on to a screen measuring, 4ft.. Gin. by 3ft. Gin. The lighting was excellent. Although I was standing 20 feet away, it would have been better if the screen had been 50 feet

nway.

AMAZING DETAIL

At the side of this apparatus was a smaller receiver for checking purposes. This showed pictures measuring 10 by 8 inches, and the detail was amazing. One could clearly follow two care in the film racing round a distant winding moun- tain road. The subtle qualities of light and ahade so necessary for good pictures were all there. The picture remained steady and clear.

Even when the room was flood-

ed with sunlight the brillaney of the picture was sumetent to pro- vide perfect entertainment

with the sound which,

companiment from the

Ac.

was virtually a cinema show in the home.

Unlike most other television systems, no high vollages are used. The highest in the receiver will not excred 250 volls, and it is possible to obtain results with as low as 60 volts. This means that houses not suppiled with electric light will still be able to "look-in" with battery television receivers.

Scophony engineers are develop- ing a standard receiver for home use, which will provide pictures 18in. by 12in.

TREMENDOUS PROGRESS

I passed from the laboratory, which was originally the ballroom, into an- other large hall, where there was a full-size cinema screen. The up- paratus for producing pictures of this size is nearly complete.

Tremendous progress has been....... made since I saw the Scophony demonstration a few years ago.

SENT FOR TRIAL

Recently Clay was committed for trial at the Old Balley accused of murdering Phyllis Brace, his sweet- heart.

Mr. E. Clayton, prosecuting, said that in June Clny entered Epping Institution. He was there as a patient until he asked for his discharge. On June 22, about 11 Clay, a.m., Misa Brace called at Epping Institution. nginta medical advice, took his own discharge.

On July 23 Clay was found near Theydon Bois ly-

ing near a heap of stones. Clny said:

"I have been in the forest. I have had some drugs. There is a girl in the forest. She may be dead."

A doctor saw Clay and ordered his removal to hos- pital, and the girl was found dead in Epping Forest next day.
