TAKE EXERCISE, but

TAKE IT EASY

а

A few home-truths by Wimpole. Street Doctor on the wrong way to "Keep Fit."

T is astonishing how few people grasp the fact that there is a tremendous dir- between ference

keeping healthy and keeping fit. The human body is a delicately In- adjusted mechanism of finite complexity.

While it will uncomplainingly endure a vast number of abuses tor a long period, sooner or later there comes the time when the part which has been most con- sistently overtaxed will give And way under the strain.

the damage is often then irreparable.

Let us consider first the case of the man who must keep ft as an essential part of his job-the pro- fessional athlete.

His life consists of keying him- aolt up for a series of tremendous physical efforts. He is continually under the supervision of an expert trainer, his training periods are carefully controlled so as to bring This body gradually into a condition which will enable it to put out its maximum power.

B

FTWEEN

ZORBONS

he

takes things very easily, and only indulges in the lightest forms of exercise.

Yet in spite of all this care, his 011e nightmare is that he should 'go stalo"-that fa, his over- strained system goes on strike and Manager.

refuses to function except in a lethargic manner.

By contrast, the "keeping at fend" probably leads a sedentary. life and accupies his days with brainwork which must of necessity make a constant drain on his ner- Tiara, in his spare vous energy. moments, he endeavours to attato endurance of the strength and the professional athlete by his immoderate devotion to some rc- glane which, he is convinced, is a panacea for all human liis.

Three major tragedies arise from this type of obsession. To begin with, his body probably has some special idiosyncrasy which really does need some extra stimulus of a certain kind,

HE

TE proceeds.(a) to give his

unfortunate body far more of that stimulus than any human being could suc- cessfully tolerate; and (b) to assure his friends and acquaint- unces with apostolie fervour that they, too, are in need-of-this stinrulus.

The third tragedy is that if only he had observed the golden rule of moderation in all things he would almost certainly have brune- fited his health and nehloved the goal at which he was aiming.

I am aware that I shall raise a storm about my head if I dare to oriticise exercise in any shape or form, but the fact regrettably re- mains that most exercise fanatles

do themselves more harm than good.

While they are young they can stand it, but so few of them heed the warning of the passing years, and moderate their energy to suit their falling powers.

Bo we get those terribly common disabilities of middle age-the thickened enlarged heart, the arteries, the impaired kidneys and, in their train, rheumatism, indi- gestion, acidity, and all the other allied troubles.

It is pride, more than anything. else, which encompasses the down- fall of the exorcise fanatic. He cannot bear the thought that he is growing older, he boasts that he is still as good as a youngster half his age, so he is heedless of the warning given by the feeling of exhaustion which comes after his exercises.

I do not for one moment suggest that exercise in moderation is any- thing but admirable. The danger. of the."keeping fit" fetish is that it invariably seems to lead its de- votees into immoderation. Nothing could be better than a reasonable. all-round physical development.

But lot a man or woman be caught by the craze for physical culture and We get swollen distended chests, muscles and which are certain to spell trouble sooner or later.

The day comes when it is impos- sible to take sumclent exercise to keep those huge muscles in con- ⚫dition.

Any engineer will tell you that the problem of ventilating ar ordinary dwelling-house is an ex- tremely dimeult one. Only in the last few years has it been solver by air-conditioning, and even not this is a luxury far beyond th purses of the vast majority.

As can be easily demonstrated a draught of cold air lowers the powers of resistance of the bods and gives the disease germs which are always present in it a better chance of multiplying.
