Queen Mary is Out of Date'

-Scientist's "Foolish" Attack

EXPERTS DENY CHARGES

AN extraordinary criticism of the liner Queen Mary, in

which the ship is described as being old-fashioned in design, too slow, and unsuitably engined has just been made in a scientific paper called Armchair Science.

The attack is made by Professor A. M. Low, the noted writer on scientific matters.

Already his opinions have aroused a storm of controversy. Leading men in the engineering and shipping world heatedly rofute Professor Low's statements.

Professor Low's arguments are thati-

She should have had internal combustion engines instead of turbines;

She should have had a speed of 50 or 60 m.p.h.

When these vlows were placial delore Cunard-White Star offl- cials they described the eritielums as "ridiculous.”

The head of a well-known Arm of marine engineers said the attack was based on misconceptions,

In Professor Low's madeen liner the vessel would be entered from the stern. Trains would run inte thin along a specially constructed rond, so that passengers could drive to cabins or move along travelling gtnir- ways as if ashore,

Streamlined Train

Shanghai, May 28, CHINA'S first "streamlined" train has gone into service after a year in construction al the Woosung shops, near Shang- hal.

But its streamlining is more decorative than functional, and no effort has been made at par ticularly light-weight design or other factors allowing high speed, for the train is to be em- ployed in local service between Shanghai North Station and Nanhslang,

the Nanking line - tofal distance of 14 miles, with one station between.

There is only one train in the Far East which may really be called streamlined in any true sense, this being the express on the South Manchuria Railway. Its steam locomotive has been shielded in such fashion ።። to decrease wind resistaner, and it makes relatively high speeds, though they Iturdly compare with American nations.
