INVENTION THAT MAY

MAY END

PERIL TO SUNKEN

SUBMARINES

THERE are shortly to be placed in the hands of the Admiralty details of an invention that claims to do away with many of the perils of submarino navigation. Mr. W. Lawlor, of York-st., Dublin, is the inventor, and his device is described as a "means for locating| sunken submarines and supplying requisites to the crews thereof."

Briefly, it will enable a sunken submarine to be located easily and to be supplied with fresh air and food until the vessel can be raised.

Hundreds of lives have been loat in submarine disasters, the main reason being the difficulty in locating the sunken vessCİB.

In some cases days have elapsed before they have been found."

When the M.2 went down in West Bay, of Portland in 1932, 60 lives were lost. M.2 was tot located for days despite tile most intensive search that has ever been known. It was not until a year later that she was brought to the surface,

Probably if she had been fitted with this new Invention, the crew would be alive to-day.

HOW IT WORKS

An expert told how the device will work,

"Directly the crew know they are trapped, they relense a plug which sends a float attached to hundreds of feet of line rushing to the surface," he said..

"Hours-even days-will be saved by rescue vessels, for they will immediately see the float-it ean be luminated by night-and they will send_down a diver...

He will descend to the sea- bed with a pipe two or three inches in diameter which he will

1t into a special socket in the |submerged vessel,

"A tap on the side of the

submarine will act as a warning to the crew to remove a plug, and the pipe will supply the trapped men with air. No longer will they die a lingering and painful death from asphyxiation or lack of food.

"Water, hot soup, and even food of small bulk will be sent down to

the men.

Man Seeks Divorce from

Wife Who Went to Fortune-Tellers

Paris, May 20.

A man made an application for divorce in the Paris courts to-day because, he claimed, his wife consulted clair- voyants, palmists, and crystal-gazers to such an extent that all her house-keeping money was spent on "looking into the future."

Counsel for the husband said the wife spent anything from 1s. to £5 every time she was "shown the future." She not only consulted spiritualists but also relied on fortune-telling by cards, by coffee-cup dregs, and by the crystal.

"The husband will tell you," continued counsel, "that if he happened to mention at the breakfast table that he thought the new Government now being elec his wife would hurry off to a "If there is a rough 'sen there fortune-teller that same day and will be no need to attempt to raise greet him in the evening with: the Sunken vessel until weather "According to the crystal Jeonditions are favourable,
