MYSTERY PATCH ON THE SUN BAFFLES SCIENTISTS

ASTRONOMER-ROYAL STUDYING IT NOW

"SO FAR IT HAS HAD NO EFFECT, BUT IT MAY CAUSE TELEPHONE, WIRELESS AND TELEGRAPH' TROUBLE".

—BRITISH G. P. Ö. ·

THE world's astronomers have for the past week been observing the most mysterious stream of sunspots ever known.

The group of spots (a patch 80,000 miles long) is the largest seen on the sun's surface for many years. It was expected to cause:--

Magnetic storms;

Interference in wireless reception;

Difficulties in telegraph and telephone transmission.

Yet as far as can be discovered by the Royal Observa-

the past month. So far, however, none of any importance has been recorded.

"It must, of course, be borne in mind that such disturbances take a long time to reach the earth.

"We would normally expect the climax here a day and a half after the sunspot has come opposite the earth.

"You can detect magnetic atorms easily with a compass. They vio- lently agitate the compass needle.

"Suck storms are important. They have a considerable effect on wireless transmission and recep- tion and also on telegraphic and telephonic communication.

"We are not certain exactly what sunspots are. There is much dif- ference of opinion..

"So far as we can tell, they are in the nature of chronic disturb auces in the gascous substance of the sun, and they have a vertical motion like a cyclone or a whirl- pool,"
