BRITISH PROFESSOR'S THEORY

The ground beneath you is drift- ing as you read this. It has been drifting ever since the earth was formed to a rhythm that taken 150 million years to complete.

The movement is silent, irresisti ble and perpetual. Only its results -volcanoch, earthquakes, climatio conditions--affect your life.

Dr. W. W. Waters of the Imperial College, London, writ- ing in Science, discusses this earth movement and opposes the theory the earth is shrink- ing and some day will be a dried-up crust lashed by searing winds and scorched by blazing hent.:

Hongkong, long before then will be joined to the Chinese mainland.

"There is the fact that the vigour of mountain building, of volcanoes and other manifestations of unrest has shown no sign of senility or lack of energy," he wrote.

"The Earth is a lady of a cer-1 tain age, but she haa contrived to preserve her youth and energy as well as her bonuty."

Highlights of Dr. Waters' dis- form, drift and sertation on rhythm of the continents includ- ed:

1. The earth to-day Is recover- ing from the greatest period of

building mountain

the and greatest retreat of its ocean it has i over experienced.

2. Water again will rise over present continenta because of the tremendous heat towards the cen- tre of the earth which has liquifled the rock and created on unfirm baae through which the continents must sink.

LATEST FISH STORY What

IT RAINED JELLYFISH

The latest "fish-from-the- aky" story comes from Mel- - bourne, Australia.

Residents at Frankston, a seaside suburb, were mystified to see tens of thoneatides of tiny jellyfish descending during a rainstorm.

The fish measured about half an inch in length and about one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch in width. Some were. striped, says Austral News.

When the sun shone apain the masses of deposited jelly- fish dried up into brown lumps. The waterspout explanation is the only one so far offered

Treasury oficials in Washing- ton point out that, whatever Mr. George Vanderbilt has just re- ceived as a quarter of his sharo in his father's estate, he will not have to pay any inheritance tax on it. The United States had not estate tax laws until more than a year after his father's death.

NEW EXPLANATION OF MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS

A strange light which Colum- bus saw on October 11, 1492,. has been a mystery ever since. Now, however, Mr. L. R. Craw shay, of the Marine Biological Association Laboratory, Ply mouth, essays a further solution in the latest issue of Nature.

This curious light was re- corded, as seen by Columbus and others from the poop of the Santa Maria about 10 p.m., ap- parently off Watling's Island. The light was seen some dis- tance away in the darkness.

It was described as "Looking like the flame of a small candle alter- nately raised and lowered." It Reems to have gone out of sight again not long after.

It is thought that the light was 35 miles or so eastward of the landfall.

"At such un estimated distance eastward of Watling's," says Mr. Crawshay, "the position of the light would be well out into the Atlantic, in some 3,000 fathoms of water, where the presence of a native canoe accounting for it, s suggested by Markham, seems in conceivable.

"Scarcely more credible is the
