HOLLYWOOD

IS SHORT OF STARS

Hollywood, Nov. 15. There is a shortage of stars in Hollywood. Whether it is because the public does not take so kindly to the leading instead players, demanding better stories and productions, or whether the newcomers to the ranks of stars have not the attraction and appeal of the old, Hollywood does not know. All it knows is that the shortago' is going to cost the studios a lot of money.

For example, the notes of financial discord heard recently be tween Myrna Loy and her rotund paymaster, Louix B. Mayer, of Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer, were not a

The agents, with a careful eye discovered the market, have that the bigger stars, such Garbo, Dietrich, Eddie Cantor, George Arliss and Charles Laugh- ton, are getting fewer..

The talkies meant the invasion of hundreds of stage actors and actresses, and from these a dozen or more jumped into the top flight. That period has come to an end and now the outlook is gloomy. Garbo has queened it over

the

screen for nearly 10 years, and there is no indication of anyone taking her place. The Gables, the Arlisses, the Laughtons have all been established for several years, and their position Is not threaten- ed by newcomers.

In fact, Fred Astaire and Shirley Temple are the only two new stara of any magnitude to ap- pear for the last three years, and to offset their arrival is the loss of Marie Dressler and Will Rogera.
