Charges of Importing *1,850 taels of raw oplum, and possession of the drug, were preferred against Au Lee, 66, managing Lee firm of vegetable dealers, want 107 to 119 Central Market, and Tan Kam, aged 40, hend salesman of the Arm, when they appeared before Mr. W. Schofield, at the Central Police Court yesterday afternoon.
Revenue Officer A. W. Grimmitt conducted the case for the prosecution while Mr. Leo D'Almada, Sen, appeared for the first defendant, Au Lee, and Mr. F. H. Lobby for the second defendant. The charges were denied.
Revenue Officer Grimmitt stated that the steamer Ban Nam Hing arrived from Macao on the early morning of July 26 carrying a cere of vegetables. The usual custom was for coolles who are under contract to different firms in the Central Market to go on board the ship, obtain a covering letter from the compradors and take delivery of the cargo,
In this case two coollen were under contract to the Kwong Lee firm for the past six months and were paid 36 cents per basket.

Amoy, July 24. Kutangsu mourns to-day the death of one of its most respected members, John C. Roberts, who had boon for the last three years ac countant of the Amoy branch of the Hongkong & Shanghal Banking Corporation, Ltd.
Mr. Roberts was alling for over six weeks, but the end came sud- denly, and was indeed, a shock to his many friends. He was out last Saturday, and seemed as if he would soon be his old genial self again.
