NATIONAL" FINNISH EPIC

SONGS AND HEROES OF THE PEOPLE

"THE KINGDOM OF THE NORTH"

By ALAN S. C. ROSS

The Centenary Jubilee of the Kalevala, Finland's national epic, which was celebrated in Finland recently by the Finns, and also by Kalevala scholars from all over the world. is of such great importance because for exactly, a century the Kale- vala had been the national em- blem of the Finnish race.

"

During the last century the Finns have passed through times of tribulation and oppression, and then the Kalevala consoled them and brought them a promise of hope; now, at last, with their in- dependence, they have entered into their rightful heritage, and the Kalevala still inspires them. It has lund a profound influence upon Finnish pointing, sculpture and, particularly, music-the work of; Sibelius, for which there is such a vogue in England at the moment. is a 'case in point.

It is a sad commentary on the way general knowledge is taught This for rather

not laught) in country that few English people know what the Kalevala is and that still fewer have read it. Iriefly the Kalevala is a folk-epic, and it is numbered among those dozen or so which constitute the world's great epics.

THE STORY

The poem as we rend it to-day may be described as follows: It is a series of connected days writ ten in a metre which is familiar to all English people, namely the metre of Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha" (Longfellow, during a stay in Sweden, read Schiefner's German translation of the Kale- vala, and was so struck by the beauty of the poem that he borrow ed both its metre and arrangemoni for use in his "Hiawatha).

The story deals with the heroic. adventures of certain Finnish epic Agures: Vainamoinen "the old and steadfast." Joukahainen "the young." the smith Ilmarinen "the eternal forger," and others. In it there are many primitive myths (eg, the Creation-myth of "the birth of Vainamoinen," "the birth of iron," etc.). passages of magical significance (e.g., the story of Vainamoinen's magic "singing" of Joukahainen into a swamp), and many of great lyrical beauty (eg, the story of the tragic escape of the young virgin Aino from the wooing of Vainamoinen). The central part of the Kalevala deals with the forging of the magic Sampo-not the least curious point is that no one has any idea as to what the Sampo was which brings wealth and prosperity to its

owner.

A LIVING TRADITION

But in reality the Kalevala ly not quite what it appears to tis to-day to be (for instance is the school edition with which every good Finnlah child is familiar). Early in the ninetienth century philologists began to realise that there was in Finland a vast, un- explored store-house of folk poetry, and the great philologist, Elias Lonnrot, made journeys into dix- tant parts of the country to collect (Continued-on-Page 7.)
