London.

The January Agures of unemploy- ment, as in previous years, show a large increase over those recorded in December. The total number of registered unemployed on Jang- ary 28 was 2,325,373, or 239,668 more than were regiatored on December 17. Compared with a year ago however, the total was less by G3,095. The estimated number of insured persons in em ployment was 10,055,000, a decline of 196,000 in comparison with the December figure, but 175,000 more than that at January 22, 1934.

To a substantia! extent the in- creased volume of unemployment was attributable to scasonal changes, but special causes opern- ting on the day the count was taken were severe weather conditions, which adversely affected the build- ing trade, and a large addition to the number of juveniles register- ing as applicants for work at the end of the school term. Last year the January increase was 164,989;1 in 1933 it was 170,778; and In 1932 it was 218,490. It is usual for the February figures to show a sharp recovery.

All the administrative divisions showed an increase in unemploy- ment; and the largest increase was in the London area.
