Research deals with all kinds of national problems from the em ciency of ships to the subject of "nose-closing" rays-from bolled sweets to the effect of Epsom salts! on building bricks.

In the Annual Report of the Advisory Council of the 18-year- old department it is stated that "Research to-day la necessity for the country whose Industries are to survive the competition of energetic and scientifically la- formed rivala In the world market."
