THE light-coloured dresses that were a

flattering and amusing all summer aro completely out of the fashlen picture in October, even though hot weather is linger- ing.

Of course, a woman still can wear her warm-weather sports clothes for week-ends, but when it comes to getting dressed for the street, she simply has to have a dark frock. Her summer sheers and chiffons won't do. When you set out to buy the new on semble, try to get a mental picture of the way you want to look.

Does the idea of appoaring chic, and sophisticated appeal to you? If so, go'in for black. Nothing to marter on pre autumn days. Or would you rather be a bright spot of colour when you go walking and shopping? All right, then, build your outfit around a-rusty-red, - royal blue or mustard yellow dress."*

Be sure to get either a very heavy slk crepe, a sheer alpaca or a wool crepe frock. And if you're anxious to look distinctly autumn-ish, get a fabric that's Interwoven with metallic threads; or a plain "dress trimmed-with-touches of metal cloth.

Skirts are a trifle longer and the allhouetté, generally speaking, is quite nar- row. In other words, there is an absence

of shoulder fullness, flares and pleata in skirts and details that jut outward. Raglan sleeves are very smart.

Dead black, slightly relieved by white, metal cloth and light blue touches, is a headliner. After that, oxford grey, rusty rede, tangerine, offshades of yellow and various tones of blue, are important.

Two-piece frocks are good, particularly if one has a slender, youthful figuro. And oneplece dresses, cut with peplums to give a two-plece effect are being shown in practically all of the missos and junior misses departments. Tunics are much in evidence, especially for matrons.
