GUINNESS BRANCH FOR ENGLAND

`Dublin And The Effect

of Transfer

The news that the firm of Arthur

Guinness, Son and Co. have tecided

to establish a branch brewery near London has been received with some surprise in Dublin. Every body has known that Guinness have had a site at Old Trafford, Mau- chester, for many years, and periodically there have been rumours of their impending re- moval to England, but the brewery has become so much a part of Dublin's economic life that nobody ever contemplated seriously its re- duction, much less its disappear

ance.

Guinness's brewery has been taken for granted by the Irishman, much as the Nelson Column is by the Londoner or the Eiffel Tower Its economic by the Fronchman. value to Dublin and the Irish Free Stato is so high that the mere aug gestion that part of its trade is about to be transferred to England has come as a shock to this country. In point of fact, the establishment of a branch brewery in England is likely to have little immediate -effect on conditions in

Dublin. Eventually it may mean the trane fer of acme 26 per cont. of Guinness's business to the other side of the Irish Sea, but a fairly long period of time must alapso before the change can take plače.

“BIGGEST-INDUSTRY.----

It la understood that only six kieves are being erected in London, whereas there are 26 in the brewery at St. James's Gate, Dublin. Con- sequently only a small proportion of the Dublin browing can be trans- and Guinness's business is expand- ferred to the new establishment, ing so rapidly that there is a hope here that the number of workers, who will be thrown out of employ ment will be comparatively small.

It would be impossible to ex- oggerate the importance of the Guinness concern to the Free State. It is by far the biggest industry in the 26 counties and has paid as much as $16,000,000 in Government duty in a single year. Its greatest sales in one year were well over 115,000,000 gallons of porter and stout, and every year its business is improving Furthermore, the firm is a model employer and pays more than union rates. If, there fore, any substantial portion of its business should be withdrawn from Dublin, a very heavy blow would be dealt at the Irish Free State. But Guinness's is essentially Irish firm and the family that directs it always has maintained a lively interest in this country. Lord Iveagh, like his father before him, is Chancellor of Dublin Uni- versity, and for six generations the family has been connected intimate- ly with the life of the Irish capital. It is absurd to any that Guinness's stout cannot be brewed anywhere but In, Dublin. There has been a superstition for many years that ita peculiar quality de pends on the water from the River Liffey, but as a matter of fact Guinness'e supply docs not come from the Liffey at all. It comes from the waters of the Grand Canal.

An

Ever since the Free State came into being there has been talk of the removal of the brewery to the othor side of the Irish Sea, and these, rumours have grown in strength, since the advent of Mr. de Valorn with his ideals of an Irish republic. As most

of Guinness's trade Hes outside the Free Stato, it is obvious that the firm would not wish to be separated from the British fiscal system, and

It has been understood for a long time in Dublin that one of the con
