THE PAWNSHOP
MONOPOLY
CHINESE CHAMBER
OPPOSES...
Strong opposition to the pawn- shop monopoly' scheme was raised at the monthly meeling of the Chinese General Chamber of Com- merce yesterday afternoon, when, there was a record attendance. showing the keen interest of track- era over the monopoly proposal. The Chairman, Mr. Wong Kwong- tin, was supported by Mr. Li Sing-kui, the vice-Chairman, and the Secretary, Mr. Chan Ping-at. After a longthy discussion, In which members expressed unanim ous objection to the monopoly and after representatives froni pawn- shopa and second-hand-goods firma had given their opinions, thu Chairman invited members to put the motion. On the suggestion of Mr. Wong Ping-sun, seconded by Mr. Leung Ju-cho, the meeting vot- ed without a single dissenter, that the Chamber should write to the Government against the granting of a pawnshop monopoly, and sup. porting the pawnshop owners' re- cent similar petition to the Secre- tary for Chinese Affairs.

fr. Li Yau-taun, C.NE, a former Chairman of the Chamber and the Chamber's present advisor, was in- vited to speak on the subject by Mr. Wong Kwong-tin, who phasised Mr. Ll's high qualifica tion and his thorough understand- Ing of local trade conditions. Mr. Li Yau-tsun explained that the monopoly, if granted, would not only affect all pawnshops, some of which had been in business forty years but existing employees would most certainly be thrown out of CONSIGNEES' work. As far as Mr. Li knew some of these employees were men over fifty and in some cases men over seventy years of age. It would be most unjust to `deprive The Danish Motor Vessel, these long. service employees of their only means of carnng.
