Solution to Previous Contract Problem

There is a certain thrill in making all your trunip separately. Of course, a hand must be timed properly to allow thile. You must make sure that you are going to retain control of the hand.

Today's hand is not difficult to play, but the declarer makes ten If he trump tricks and two nces. Tourist Class had led oven one round of trump,

bis contract would have been de feated. I thought the bidding on the hand rather interesting when the hand was played.

The Bidding

East has a close decision to make between doubling the one diamond or bidding a spade. Personally, I would prefer the double. With that hand you are certainly willing to play it at two spades.

cue

When South bid two clubs.. West's bid of two diamonds was a

Jil

for showing support spades. On the next round, when West forced in clubs, he was mak ing a direct slam try.

East showed control of the heart suit with a bid of four hearts. While I don't believe In misuse of ace-showing bids, there are times when an aco-showing bid of this kind is valuable. That was all the fuformation that West needed to jump to six spades.

The Play

South's opening lend was the king of clubs, declarer won with the ace in dummy and discarded a

·losing heart.........The band will cross». ruff right out for ten tricks. All the declarer needs to lose is n heart.

If a spade had been opened, of course the declarer would then have to lead up to the queen of hearts to develop a trick to make his contract. He would then use eight of his trump for cross- rufing.

Today's Contract Problem South plays the contract at els no trump. Weat opens the deuco of spades. South wine and starts the heart sult, Should Easi win the first or accond heart trick? And if not, why?
