CONTRACT CONSIGNEES NOTICE.
BRIDGE
By W. E. McKenney
:
Solution to Previous Contract Problem The greatest catastrophe in con- tract bridge is to hold a big hand and then got into the wrong spot, I much rather would have my part nor fail to bid for a slam on a board than take a gamble on a grand slam when we have a sure amall Blam.
At least we could get a plus score, if we made game, but if ho bids for the grand slam and it can not ho made, we receive a minus score, and while it may be a minus score, of only 50 or 100 points, it really is a terrific loan.
The Ridding
The three bid eliminates a lot of guesswork on big hands, especially aince the king-showing has beon in corporated, as well as ace showing. When your partner makes an orig- Inal three bid, he states that that Is the only suit at which he in in- terested in playing the contract, He asks you to show the ace of trump, if you hold it otherwise

All broken, chafed, and damaged Of course, South is not in-Goods are to be left in the Godowns, terested in any aces, since he holds where they will be examined on the them all. But he would like to 1st May, 1934, at 10 am., by Messrs. know the location of two kings, Goddard and Dougins. So he makes an original three bid, knowing that the only answer his partner can make In three no
trump.
South now is interested in the king of diamonds and the king of clubs. He first asks for the lowest ranking king by bidding four
clubs.
If North did not hold the king of clubs, he simply would bid four hearts or..holding the king-ofdin- monds, he could bid four diamonds, In this case he held the king of clubs, so his response was fire clubs.
.
South knew that he could make alx, so he did five diamonds, to see If his partner held the king of dia- monds. If North had not held the king of diamonda, he simply would bid five hearts, and South could hid six no trump.
Today's Contract Problem
If you were vulnerable anl hold the North hand in third position, what would be your opening bid, after South and West Banand? If you were not vulnerable and held the Enst hand, and North opened with ous no trump, what would you do? Remember, North d vulnerabto.
