TORY M.P'S REVOLT

Demand For Restoration

Of Dole Cuts

a It.

On the eve of Budget prepara- tions, M.P.s have started

for the reK- markable campaign toration of the "euts" in unemploy ment beneat

"Conscience-stricken" by the ap- Fearance of the Hunger Marchors, 1 and deluged with appeals from constituents and public organlan- tlona, a large section of the Con- servativo Party has resolved to press the Government to restore the unemployment "kuts" in the forthcoming Fladnce Bill,

Liberals and Labour are already united on this, but feeling among members of the Conservative Party in heing demonstrated in the lob bies openly enough to suggest that a decision to postpone resteration would result in widespread oper revolt against the Government.

The most vigorous demand for restoration comes from the North- ern Group, an Influential group of about 40 Conservative M.P.a which Concessions has already wrung from the Government on previous occasions.

In order that the Government be apprised of the volume of sympathy with this case no fewer than 30 M.P.s have sponsored a resolution now on the Order Paper in the following terma:

"That in the opinion of this House, any budgetary surplus that may be available at the end of the financial year should be applied in the first instance to the restoration of the amounts cut from unemployment benefit after the Economy Act, 1931."

M.P.8 in whose name the resolu- tion has been put down include: Mr. A. M. Lyons (E. Leicester). Mr. W. Craven-Ellis (Southernp- ton), Mr. J. G. Braithwaite (Hilla. borough), Colonel Baldwin Webb (The Wrekla), and Sir John Withera (Cambridge University).

WOMAN MINISTER'S DETERMINATION

Refusal To Withdraw Resignation

Women worshippers wept silent- ly in Partick Congregational Church, Glasgow, when the Rov. Vern Kenmure, Scotland's first her woman minister, insisted on decision to resign.

When she married a year ago the congregation asked her to carry on her ministry, but on the arrival of a child there were several who contonded that she could not efficiently carry out that duties of a minister and a mother. She resigned but was requested to reconsider her diefalon. On ter first public appearance since the birth of her baby, she said hat her resignation would take ffect at the end of March instead of at the end of May.

"I am still aware of the opposi- tion and hostility which makes onest co-operation impossible and prevents me from continuing a successful ministry," she said."

The general assembly of the Church of Scotland and the Con- gregational Union of Scotland will consider the question of women and the ministry shortly.

The Congregational Union will have to decide whether

woman

can possibly be the minister of a church, a wife and a mother at the same time.
