MR. AND MRS. G. FRANKLIN NIGHTINGALE RETIRE

By the departure; on Saturday of the P. & O. Naldera, the Colony lost two popular local residents in tho person of Mr. and Mrs. G. Franklin Nightingale, who re- cently retired from the "Govern ment Service after a residence in Hongkong of nearly seventeen yours.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Nightingale have been attached to the Central British School since April 1917; and since 1919, Mr. Franklin Nightingale has been Headmaster of the school. For brief periods prior to this date he was attached to the Queen's College and the Yaumat! School. Mr. Franklin Nightingala is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of the Royal Society of Teachers. He has spent apuroximately 22 years in the East, of these seventeen being in Hongkong except for neriods of Home leave. During the Colony he hia residence in associated himself with the wel- fare of former pupils of the School, As well as the present students, and he was largely Instrumental in forming the Kow- loon British School Former Pupila' Association which has since bo- come the Central British Associn- tion.

It was on the initiative of Mr. Franklin Nightingale that the Kowloon Chess Club came into being nearly ten years ago, when he called together a number of enthusiasts and offered them the use of the spacious hall of the Central British School in which. to hold their weekly meetings. Since its inauguration he has been President of the Club and the Interest ho has taken in Its activities has always been unfall- ing.
