Declarer now returned a small heart from dummy. East discard- ed the four of clubs, and South trumped with the six of spades. The six of clubs was returned and won in dummy with the ace. The king of clubs was cashed in dummy and another club returned.
East, having nothing else left, was forced to trump-and-did-so- with the three of spades, Declarer overtrumped with the nine and diamonds. then led the nine of West played the ten, but East was forced to trump.
East had nothing but the queen, ten and eight of spades, while de- clarer had ace, king and jack. So, regardless of what spade East re- returned, the declarer was bound to make the Inst three tricks, which gave him his contract with an overtrick.
Today's Contract Problem
