GALLANT BUT UNAVAILING BOWLING OF FRANK PEREIRA AND A. R. MINU

(By R. Abbit)

The Games in the first division of the Shield last Saturday went more or less in accord with anticipation. In each case it was rather a ques- tion of whether the weaker side could force a draw-and they failed to do so. The hardest

task was that of the H.K.C.C. who had to defeat As ! the Indians upon the Sookunpoo ground. said last week, a good deal depended upon whether the I.R.C. could be made to bat first. and, as it happened, Hayward was in a position to put them in.

It is difficult to estimale just how much difference the absence of Arthur Rumjahn makes to the batting of the Sockumpoo ride. I should place it as well over fifty per cent. There are several bats who might make a good many runs, and, against poor bowl- ing, will make a good many runs. But when up against good howling the batting of the sido is sadly to seek.

The feature of the Navy Innings was a good knock of sixty-three by Leading Seaman Peatfield. He has before shown himself a useful bat and has been out unluckily several times recently. On Saturday he came eff and his side have lilm to thank in large measure for their good showing.

It is a good many years-unless my memory decalves me-since we had a good lower deck bat ont here. In fact, the last one I can remember la Signalman Hack, and that I fancy la going back about sixteen years.

Peatfield's success is therefore thei more welcome. After the good start, the Navy went all out for quick runs and their personal

aceres did bother them.
