SUPREME PONTIFF OF

COLLISION OR NOT?

CLAIM MADE FOR

DAMAGES

A collision between two vessala

at the Chaon Un Wharf on May st year was the subject of a daim

for damages beiore Mr. Chief Justice Woou at the Suprem.

Court this morning.

The Wo Ping Steamship Com- pany claimed, $1,655 damages from the Hol Kong motor vessel winch collided with their steamer W Ping Yat.

Dir. 11. C. Macnamara, Instructed by Mr. F. H. Loseby, appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. H. G. Sheldon, instructed by Mr. F, X. D Almada, sar. represented decendants.

Claimant's counsel said the only point at issue was whether or no there was an actual collision,

Mr. T. H. G. Brayfield, marini Int surveyor, said that from examination of the Wo Ping Ya. be thought it had been struck al -most at right angles near the bow and again slighty abait of mid 'ships. The amount claimed was i reasonable figure in his opinion As there was damage to both side of the Wo Ping Yat from being forced up against the wharf,

WOMAN'S STORY.

Chan Chueng, an elderly woman, said she was a whartiger at the Chuen On wharf and remembered the incident clearly. Illustrating her ovidence with two models of borta, she said the Wo Ping Yat was tied up to the wharf when the Hei Kong came up with the current and circled round to draw up - alongside the stationary steam

ahip.

Instoad of manoeuvring alongside, however, she came up with her bows almost on the bows of the Wo Ping Yat, striking a very heavy blow.

Chau Lo, bo'nun, corroborated, Mr. Anderson. managing director of the pininlift firm, said he phoned up the defendanta about the collision and they agreed verbally and by letter to make it good. They failed to do so, how- ever.

Cross-examined by Mr. Sheldon, witness and no did not muko a re- port to the Harbour. Master as that was the duty of the captain. The captain of the ship at the time of the collision was Capt. Tennant, but he and the plaintiff had parted company some months ago and he could not now say where he was.

The case is proceeding.
