The majority of tables arrived
(Mukden) at a six club contract, a few play. Hamburg ing the hand at five clubs doubled bis and redoubled. Only three pairs arrived at a spade contract, which, it is interesting to note, is the only contract that ena be made.
The question is-la. the hand strong enough to be opened with an original forcing bid, and if a forcing bid is to be made, should a two or three forcing bld be used? Remember, an original three bid in the Sims system states that there is game in the sult first named and that partner is to name his high- est nce.
It seems that, if the ace of hearta could be Incated, there should be n alam in the hand. If an original bid of three clubs is made and and partner responds with three hearts, showing the ace of hearts, six clubs scem assured, and possibly seven.
On the other hand, some players contend that there is no definite way to tell whether the hand should be played at clubs or apades, and therefore the hand should be open-! ed with a two bid. However, I am -not- Inclined-tó-favour-the-shading
of the original two or three bid..
My partner, Sir Derrick J. Wern- her, president of the American Bridge League, and sitting in the South, opened the contracting with one club. West passed, as did I in the North. East was kind enough to keep the bidding, opon with one, heart: South then bid two spades and I responded with two no tramp.
South's next bld was four clubs and I was forced to make some re-j sponse. I decided that a four spade contract was one trick less than | five clubs, and did not feel that, either could be made, so_my_re- spouse was four spades, which East doubled.
The ten of hearts is opened and won by East with the queen. The
