"You have seen it announced In the local Chinese and English press that the Chinese Y.M.C.A. will give a series of talks on vocation. These talks are meant especially for young men who are not quite sure of the vocation that they wish to follow. It is the aim of those giving those talks to present to young people the possibilities of different vocations in China and how to prepare for them. Firm convictions in a choson vocation come to some of us early, and others rather inte in life. When I was still a senior In College, a successful business man, who is a particular friend of mine, put to me this ques- tion one day: "After your gradun- tion what are you going to do?"
The friend who thus set this huge interrogation-mark before me at the turning-point of my life was one whom we would commonly enli a self-made man." From his point BANKOW of view, he cannot perceive much being accrued from long prepara- tlon in school or college for life- work. Money lavished on a liberal education is more or less waste of time, expense and energy. To him, there is no better education than that obtained from the hard school of experience. Little did that.man realize that the advantage of a college education is to know how to think and how to get, a perspective of the background of human endeavours before a young man or 'young woman can hope to At him- self or herself into the scheme of things in the world.
